UC San Diego Policies

UC San Diego policies and procedures provide specific guidance on how presidential, systemwide, and Regents policies are carried out at the local level.

Systemwide Policies

Systemwide policies include personnel policies for staff and academic appointees. These policies apply across all campuses of the University.

Presidential Policies

Presidential Policies address all operations of the University except for those reserved to the Board of Regents, to the Academic Senate (RSO 105.2), or the Academic Personnel Manual. A Presidential Policy:

  • Applies across the University of California;
  • Is warranted to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, University policies, and Board of Regents’ Bylaws, Standing Orders, and Policies;
  • Enhances the University's mission, promotes operational efficiencies, and reduces risk to the University;
  • Endures from one Presidential administration to another and sets a course for the foreseeable future; and
  • Is approved by the President or designated executive upon recommendation of the Policy Steering Committee.

Policies approved by the Regents are implemented through the President's role in the development of associated guidelines, administrative policies, and procedures.

Regents Policies

Policies approved by the Regents are broad statements supporting the purpose, principles and philosophy of the tripartite mission of the University as a guide for subsequent action. They communicate important, enduring systemwide governing principles rather than specifying operational details, restating laws or regulations, or responding to particular issues.
